Speaking Elective Classes

These can be included in full-time or part-time classes: Each Class is 1 50-minute period.

 

Pronunciation

Level: Any
Learn to speak English more clearly. Students will also better understand the speech patterns of native English speakers.

Basic Survival English

Level: Beginner levels
Develop better speaking in everyday situations such as: banking, shopping, asking for directions or other information, and learn dialogues for using a travel agency, renting a car, etc. This is a useful class if you are newly arrived in the USA.

English Conversation

Low Intermediate through Advanced
Discuss a variety of issues and improve oral communication skills while increasing confidence in expressing feelings, ideas and opinions in conversational English.

American Idioms

Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Recognize, understand and incorporate American idioms (expressions) into everyday conversations and situations.

Discussing the News (Speaking or Academic Elective)

Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Read a news magazine and discuss and debate current issues from news, social, and cultural topics. Improve high level vocabulary and speaking skills.

Discussing Values and Philosophies (Speaking or Academic Elective)

Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Listen to famous and not so famous individuals share their personal philosophies and core values that guide their daily lives. Be challenged to explore, discuss, and write about the essays in the text. Improve high level vocabulary, writing and speaking skills.

Active Listening

Level: Beginner levels
Students learn to listen through a careful balance of activities, including listening for gist, listening for specific information, and making inferences.

Airline and Hospitality English Elective Series

 

Customer Service English

Level: Advanced (Levels 4 and up)
Learn vocabulary and speaking skills for the airline and hospitality industry.

Resume and Cover Letter Writing

Level: Advanced (Levels 4 and up)
Create an American style resume and cover letter.

Interview Skills

Level: Advanced (Levels 4 and up)
Engage in intensive vocabulary and speaking practice and prepare yourself to demonstrate your skills for an interview for a position, volunteer or otherwise.

Test Preparation Electives

Students who want to focus on speaking and listening find these classes useful because of the focus on listening, vocabulary and speaking exercises.

TOEIC Preparation Class

Level: Intermediate-Advanced
Increase your TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) score. Focus on listening and reading strategies to answer questions centered on pictures, questions and responses, short conversations, and short talks. Students are required to buy the book for this class.

TOEFL iBT Preparation Class: Reading, Writing, Listening

Level: Advanced (levels 4 and up)
This class is designed for students who need a higher TOEFL score for the TOEFL Next Generation iBT. Students are required to buy the book for this class.

TOEFL iBT Speaking Class

Level: Advanced (levels 4 and up)
Practice for the speaking section of the TOEFL Next Generation iBT. Students are required to buy the book for this class.

IELTS Preparation Class: Reading, Writing, Listening

Level: Advanced (levels 4 and up)
Increase your IELTS score. Learn listening and reading strategies and improve your writing with new vocabulary, language and organization. Students are required to buy the book for this class.
